What the Work Includes

  • Preparation. Excavation, fill and compaction.
  • Formwork. Edge shutters, or full formwork and props for suspended slabs.
  • Damp-proofing. DPM under ground slabs.
  • Reinforcement. Mesh or bar steel to specification.
  • Concrete. Ready-mix supply, pump, pour and finish.
  • Curing. Keeping the slab moist so it reaches strength.

Suitable Projects

House floors, extensions, garages, patios, workshops, carports, water tank bases and outbuildings. Larger commercial and warehouse floors are covered under Industrial Concrete Slabs.

Available Systems

  • Surface bed. A ground-bearing slab inside strip footings.
  • Raft slab. A slab and foundation in one. See Raft Foundations.
  • Rib and block. Precast beams with blocks and a topping, for upper floors.
  • In-situ suspended slab. Formed and poured in place, for spans and cantilevers.

How the System Is Chosen

Ground conditions, the span, the loads and the finish you want set the slab type. Suspended slabs need an engineer.

Project Process

  1. Plans. Drawings or a clear description of size and use.
  2. Quote. Contractors measure and price.
  3. Prepare. Excavate, compact and form up.
  4. Steel. Mesh or bars fixed and inspected.
  5. Pour. Concrete placed and finished.
  6. Cure. Slab cured before loading.

What Affects Cost and Timelines

  • Thickness and steel. Set by loads and design.
  • Finish. Power floating, polishing or screed.
  • Volume. Small pours carry minimum load charges.
  • Access. Pump hire where trucks cannot reach.

What to Send for an Accurate Quote

  • Your name, email and phone or WhatsApp number.
  • Your town or suburb.
  • The service you need.
  • The approximate size, such as floor area in m² or wall length and height.
  • A short project description and your preferred start date.
  • Whether you have approved plans, engineer's drawings or a soil report.

Plans, drawings and photos can be shared with the contractor you choose once you are in contact.

Concrete Slabs FAQs

How much does a concrete slab cost per m²?

As a ballpark, R500 to R850 per m² for a ground surface bed and R1,400 to R2,500 per m² for an in-situ suspended slab, excluding VAT.

How long before I can walk on a new slab?

Usually after a day or two. Heavy loads and building on top need longer, as advised by the engineer or contractor.

Do I need mesh in my slab?

Most slabs are reinforced. The specification comes from the plans or engineer.

Can a slab be poured in the rain?

Contractors avoid it, as rain damages the surface. Pours are rescheduled for dry days.

Should I use a concrete pump?

Where the truck cannot reach the slab, a pump is quicker and gives a better pour than barrowing.
